We are a small, passionate kennel co-owned by Lee Dickie and Ben Williams. The Briarpatch is located just outside Berwick, Nova Scotia.
At the Briarpatch, we believe in responsible breeding practices that prioritize the health and happiness of our dogs. Our focus on ethical standards ensures that each Flat-Coated Retriever we produce embodies the breed's exceptional qualities.
Although we only have the occasional litter, our goal is to produce Flat-Coated Retrievers that are not only physically sound and visually striking, but also possess excellent working abilities, truly embodying the best of the breed.
We are incredibly grateful to have been entrusted with exceptional foundation dogs and breeding stock from the experienced breeders at Prairielight, Krieger’s Ridge, and DueNorth Kennels
All of our dogs undergo extensive evaluations, multiple health screenings and testing; inclusive of annual eye exams, gonioscopy, cardiac evaluations, genetic testing for diversity and coat colours, as well as OFA certifications for hips ( ± PennHip), elbows, and patellas.
We do extensive research before we breed, utilize various databases, including BetterBred's genetic data, and pedigrees within FlatcoatData. Combined, this information helps us plan for a genetically diverse and exceptional quality puppies.
As proud active members of both the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and the Flat-Coated Retriever Society of Canada (FCRSC), we are committed to upholding the highest standards in breeding and care for our Flat-Coated Retrievers throughout their lives.
All of our dogs are CKC registered purebred.
The Flat-Coated Retriever (FCR) originated in England during the mid-1800s, developed from the St. John’s Dog and selectively bred with working field setters, sheepdogs, and spaniels. It was the first retriever to gain widespread recognition as a shooting companion and, by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, had become the preferred choice for formal game shooting and wildfowling.
Over time, the breed has maintained its reputation as a versatile retriever, with minimal distinction between field and show lines. Field Flat-Coats should possess sound structure and adhere to breed standards, while conformation Flat-Coats should retain the physical ability to perform in the field.
